PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity would jump out to an early lead on Tuesday night, but the visiting Indiana Northwest RedHawks rallied to take the final three sets to defeat the Trolls in five, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-12 inside DeVos Gymnasium.
The Trolls (5-13, 4-4 CCAC) would start the night by taking a 2-0 lead with a pair of narrow wins in the first two sets. In the opener Trinity would jump out to an 8-3 advantage after a kill from Taryn Hinken, but the visitors battled back, evening the score at 12-12. Later in the set the RedHawks (4-16, 3-4 CCAC) would lead 23-22, before a bad set, and kills from Dej'a Williams and Hinken would give the set to the Trolls with a three-point rally.
Indiana Northwest would use a 5-1 run midway through game two, taking a 15-13 lead, before Trinity took control by scoring six in a row as part of a 9-2 rally that gave the Trolls a 22-17 advantage. Williams closed out the second set with a kill to give the Trolls a two-game lead on the night.
The RedHawks bounced back in the third, despite falling behind early 6-2 before taking a lead with six of the next seven points. A four-point run for the visitors pushed their lead further, and they would stay in front the rest of the way to extend the match.
Trinity nearly finished out the match in the fourth, leading 19-18 and forcing a RedHawk timeout, but IU Northwest would score three straight to lead 21-19. Kills from Hinken and Williams, and two kills from Sarah Neighbors would keep things close, but Trinity were unable to reclaim the lead down the stretch in a 25-23 loss.
In the fifth set, the RedHawks would take a 7-3 lead to start, and would maintain the lead the rest of the way to take the match.
Hinken finished the night with 15 kills to lead the Trolls, while Brooke Veldman posted 14 kills with a .407 attack percentage. Alexis Bartz tallied 54 assists to go with 17 digs and six kills. Sarah Neighbors recorded 20 digs and 13 kills on the night.
The Trolls will look to bounce back on Thursday night, when they travel to Calumet. First serve with the Crimson Wave is set for 7:00 p.m.
