UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Trinity volleyball clinched the No. 3 seed in their return to the CCAC Tournament appearance after a two-year absence, as the Trolls closed out the regular season with a straight-set sweep at Governors State on Thursday night.
Brooke Veldman led the way, scoring a match-high 11 kills along with seven total blocks for the Trolls (10-18, 8-6 CCAC). Sarah Neighbors scored 10 kills and three aces to go with seven digs, while Dej'a Williams tallied seven kills and six blocks in the win.
Trinity took a commanding lead early, going up 10-1 in the first set. Governors State (1-22, 1-13 CCAC) rallied to within a point with eight in a row at 10-9, but the Trolls would pull away throughout the rest of the game, allowing just four points the rest of the way in a 25-13 win.
The home team would hold an early lead in game two, before kills from Williams and Neighbors fueled a 6-1 run to give the Trolls a 10-8 advantage. Trinity would hold the lead the rest of the way, setting up game point with a block from Taryn Hinken and Williams at 24-18. The Jaguars would score four straight before a service error gave the Trolls the win at 25-21.
Trinity built another big lead to start the third set, going up 15-6, as Veldman posted four kills in a six-point span. A kill from Raimey Owens gave the Trolls match point at 24-18, and another Jaguar service error closed out the night at 25-20.
The Trolls will now prepare for the postseason opener, set for Tuesday, November 7, inside DeVos Gymnasium. First serve in the CCAC Tournament quarterfinal with No. 6 seed Saint Xavier is set for 7:00 p.m.
