HUNTINGTON, Ind. – In their first tri-match of the season, Trinity Volleyball dropped a pair of road games on Tuesday, falling in straight sets to Concordia (Mich.) and in four to hosts Huntington (Ind.).
Recovering from a 25-15 loss in the opening set to the Cardinals (2-0), the Trolls (0-3) battled back in games two and three. Trailing 15-14 in the second set, a pair of kills from Brooke Veldman started an 8-2 run to give Trinity a 22-17 advantage. The Cardinals would bounce back, closing out the set by scoring six of the final eight points to win 25-23. In the third, a late four-point run put the Trolls in front 21-16, but Concordia would come back again, scoring eight straight to close out the match.
Veldmand and Taryn Hinken finished with a team-high eight kills, while Jorieliss Caraballo registered 12 digs to lead the defense.
In the second match of the day the Trolls started the first set again with a late lead that slipped away; Hinken's kill gave Trinity a 21-17 advantage, but the Foresters (6-1) rallied with an 8-2 run to steal the opener 25-23. The Trolls took their first set of the day in the second, with two kills apiece from Dej'a Williams, Hinken, and Sarah Neighbors helped to fuel an 8-4 run down the stretch for a 25-22 win.
In the third, Huntington's 11-1 run midway through the set would give the home team the lead throughout in a 25-19 decision, but the fourth game would be extended as neither team could pull away after a block from Veldman and Sharide Sykes tied the set at 16-16. Both teams would have two set point opportunities but were unable to capitalize, until the Foresters closed out the match at 29-27.
Williams finished with 11 kills in the match to lead the Trolls, while Caraballo collected 24 digs.
The Trolls return to DeVos Gymnasium on Friday, when they host Saint Francis (Ind.) and William Woods (Mo.) in a tri-match beginning at 3:00 p.m.
