Trolls take sweep over Governors State

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity volleyball picked up their second conference win in a row on Tuesday night, as the Trolls earned a straight-set sweep of the Governors State Jaguars, 29-27, 25-12, 25-12 inside DeVos Gymnasium.

The win places the Trolls (3-10, 2-1 CCAC) in a four-way tie for second in the CCAC standings at this early point in the season, as Sarah Neighbors led the attack with a match-high 14 kills and four service aces. Dej'a Williams added 12 kills on the night, while Jorieliss Caraballo tallied 15 digs. Alexis Bartz and Sharide Sykes split time at setter to combine for 23 and 13 assists, respectively.

The tightest set of the night came in the opener, when the Jaguars (0-12, 0-3 CCAC) opened on an 8-1 run to force an early Trinity timeout. The Trolls worked their way back into the game, eventually pulling even following a 5-1 rally that was capped with a Brooke Veldman kill at 17-17. Kills from Veldman and Neighbors followed with a Jaguar attacking error would give the home team their first lead of the night at 21-20. The Trolls would see set point four times before finally knocking off the Jaguars with a three-set run to close the game at 29-27.

From then on it was all Trinity, as the Trolls took an 8-3 advantage to start game two. A seven-point run midway through the game stretched a 10-6 lead into a 17-6 score, as the Trolls cruised to a 25-12 win.

The Jaguars bounced back early in game three, leading after scoring the first three points of the set, and remaining in front until 9-7. Kills from Neighbors and Sykes started a five-point rally for Trinity, as Governors State would be held to just three points the rest of the way in another 25-12 decision.

The Trolls will look to continue the momentum as they start a two-match road swing in conference on Thursday, September 14 at Olivet Nazarene. First serve from Bourbonnais is set for 7:00 p.m.
