MARION, Ind. – Sarah Neighbors led the way with a combined 13 kills, but the Trolls struggled to find a rhythm in a tri-match on Saturday, falling in straight sets to Cornerstone (Mich.) and No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan.
In the first match of the day, Raimey Owens led the Trolls (1-7) with five kills, while setter Alexis Bartz picked up 11 assists in a loss to Cornerstone (3-3), 25-15, 25-22, 25-17. Neighbors led the defense with 16 digs, while Taryn Hinken posted six total blocks to go along with three kills.
The Trolls would lead 8-6 in the opening set with the Golden Eagles, before Cornerstone responded with a 12-3 run to take control of the set. Game two would see Trinity with another early lead, after a Neighbors ace and Dej'a Williams kill put the Trolls ahead 5-2. Cornerstone would move in front with six in a row to lead 9-6, but Trinity nearly pulled even late in the set.
Trailing 20-15, the Trolls would score four in a row thanks to a block from Aalyssa Gunn and Hinken, plus back-to-back kills from Owens. The Golden Eagles would take four of the next five to pull away again and take a 2-0 lead. Cornerstone would take a 6-1 lead in the third, and go on to lead wire-to-wire to close out the match.
In the second match of the day, Neighbors posted nine kills against the 8th-ranked Wildcats (6-0), while Jorieliss Caraballo collected eight digs to lead the defense. The home team would jump out to early leads in all three sets to take the contest 25-13, 25-10, 25-15.
The Trolls return to DeVos Gymnasium on Tuesday night, when they continue CCAC play against Indiana South Bend. First serve with the Titans is set for 7:00 p.m.
