Trinity splits pair of matches as Trolls Classic

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Trolls' win streak would reach five before a tough five-set loss would end Trinity's run, as the team picked up a four-set win over Goshen (Ind.) before falling in five to Stephens (Mo.) Saturday at the Troll Classic inside DeVos Gymnasium.

Trinity would drop a close opening set to the Maple Leafs, 25-23 to start the day, but recover to defeat Goshen in three straight, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22. Sarah Neighbors led the way with 15 kills and 17 digs, while Sharide Sykes also recorded a double-double in the win with 24 assists and 14 digs.

In the second game of the day, Trinity looked poised to come away with a sweep, winning the first two sets 25-17, 25-17. The Stars bounced back in a dominant game three, 25-13 and narrowly pushed the match to a decisive set after taking game four, 25-23.

In the fifth set, Stephens built an early lead, 8-5 before kills from Neighbors, Makenzie Ritsema, and Aalyssa Gunn gave Trinity a 3-1 run to close the gap, 9-7. The Stars would score three of the next four to pull away, 13-8 on the way to a 15-9 win.

Ritsema finished with 19.5 points in the match, including a team-high 14 kills and a .600 attack percentage to go along with three aces and five blocks. Alexis Bartz tallied 19 assists with 16 digs to record her fourth double-double of the year.

Trinity is set to resume CCAC play next week, when they host Governors State on Tuesday, Oct. 7. First serve with the Jaguars is set for 7:00 p.m.
