GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Trinity Volleyball closed out the weekend with a pair of tough matchups on Saturday, falling in straight sets to Cumberland (Tenn.) and No. 24 Aquinas (Mich.) at the Cornerstone/Aquinas Invite.
Sharide Sykes recorded the double-double in the first match of the day, scoring 10 kills with 16 assists. Jorieliss Caraballo posted ten digs to lead the defense while Dej'a Williams and Makenzie Ritsema each had four blocks.
Trinity would fall in the first two sets to Cumberland, 25-18 and 25-16 but would respond with a competitive game three. The Trolls would lead 11-5 after a seven-point run, and would stay in front until a 10-2 rally from the Phoenix would give them a two-point lead, 16-14.
The Trolls would reclaim the lead with kills from Aalyssa Gunn and Sykes to fuel a three-point run, 23-21, but Cumberland would rally to take match point at 24-23. Trinity would hold them off twice, and get set point at 26-25, but the Phoenix came back with three in a row to close out the match.
In the second match of the day, and the third match against a team ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA top 25, Trinity would face Aquinas, where Sykes would again lead the attack with a team-high seven kills.
Trinity would drop the first set to the Saints, 25-17 after Aquinas used a 9-2 run to erase the Trolls' 5-3 advantage to go up 11-7 and lead the rest of the way. The Trolls would again lead early in game two, 8-5 before Aquinas out-scored Trinity 14-5 over the middle of the set to lead 19-13. Trinity would hold off two set points to close the gap but would fall 25-22 in the second set.
Game three would go to the Saints, as Aquinas led wire-to-wire to close out the match, 25-15.
The Trolls will look to bounce back when they resume conference play at Governors State on Tuesday, Sept. 9. First serve with the Jaguars is set for 7:00 p.m.
