Box Score 2 The Trinity men's volleyball team competed at the Viterbo University Triangular today as they took on the V-Hawks and the Morningside College Mustangs. After today's matches, Trinity left LaCrosse, Wisconsin going 1-1.
In the first match of the day, the Trolls took on the V-Hawks, who they defeated earlier in the season. Viterbo came out strong, dominating Trinity in the first set 25-11. From there, the Trolls cleaned up their game but still lost the second set 23-25. From there, they came back to take the third 25-22 before losing the last set 22-25, resulting in a 1-3 loss to Viterbo.
Two Trolls had double-digit kills, and they were junior Djordje Novakovic with 13 and freshman Bart van der Mark with 11. Van der Mark also grabbed three blocks. Also helping the Trolls was senior Danny Lawerence who recorded 37 assists while sophomore Adam Becker finished with 12 digs and two aces. Senior Jon Poortinga added a team-high four blocks.
The second match of the day started shortly after as the Trolls took on the Mustangs. Morningside was able to squeeze out a 25-23 win in the first set, but from there, the Trolls took over. They won the following three sets 25-23, 25-19 and 25-20 to win the match 3-1.
Novakovic along with freshman Mark Hernandez and sophomore Jake Ostema had double-digit kills, with Hernandez and Novakovic registering 11. Ostema hit .500 in the match (10 kills, 2 errors, 16 attempts) to lead the team in that category. Lawrence added another 35+ assists with 39 to help the offense while Becker finished with 13 digs. Van der Mark also led the team in blocks with four.
The Trolls are now 11-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. They will be back in action again on Monday, March 9 as they host Graceland in a non-conference game. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
