Box Score UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Brooke Veldman led Trinity with a season-high 20 points on Tuesday night as the Trolls rallied from a two-set deficit, but hosts Governors State would hold on for a five-set win, 25-15, 25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 18-16.
Veldman finished with a .500 attack percentage on the night, along with a pair of service aces and a solo block for the Trolls (3-25, 1-12 CCAC). Setter Emma Dykstra tallied 38 assists, while Cecilia Zuniga led the defense with 18 digs.
Trinity took an early lead in the first set, but the Jaguars (5-15, 1-12 CCAC) bounced back, taking a 10-6 lead with a four-point rally. The home team would remain in front the rest of the way, closing out the set on a six-point run.
Governors State would take the second set as well, but not before a five-point rally fueled by a pair of kills and a solo block from Veldman gave the Trolls a 20-19 edge. The Jaguars would come back, scoring seven of the final nine points to build a two-set advantage in the match.
Trailing midway through game three 11-8, the Trolls bounced back, scoring four in a row to take a 12-11 lead on three kills from Taryn Hinken. Governors State would even the score at 18-18 later in the set, but a kill and service ace from Dykstra led to a 21-18 Trinity advantage. Hinken's ace gave the Trolls set point at 24-21, and two plays later Trinity would take their first set of the night.
A pair of big rallies would give the Trolls a fourth-set victory, with a 6-1 run highlighted by back-to-back aces from Noonan put Trinity in front 11-7. The Trolls would later score eight of nine straight points, with two aces and a kill coming from Sarah Neighbors, to claim a 19-12 lead. The Jaguars came back, pulling to within a point at 23-22, but two errors from the home team would close out the game and force a decisive fifth set.
Governors State opened with three in a row, but the Trolls used an 8-2 run to take a lead midway through game five. The score would eventually be tied at 13-13 following a kill for the Jaguars, and Governors State would hold match point four times before finally closing out the night at 18-16.
The Trolls return home for a three-match homestand, beginning on Thursday, October 27, when they host Indiana South Bend. First serve from DeVos Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
