Trolls win home finale over Calumet

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Three Trolls finished in double figures, as Trinity closed out the home portion of the 2022 season with a victory, defeating Calumet in four sets, 25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, on Tuesday night inside DeVos Gymnasium.

Sarah Neighbors and Brooke Veldman each finished with 16 kills in the win, while Taryn Hinken picked up 15. Neighbors also had a double-double, with 18 digs, matching Cecilia Zuniga for the game-high. Emma Dykstra tallied 26 assists to lead the Trolls (4-27, 2-14 CCAC).

Calumet (7-17, 3-13 CCAC) jumped out to an early lead in the first set, 6-2, before the Trolls responded. Trinity came back with an 11-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Veldman, and service aces from Shannon Simpson and Trisha Noonan. Trinity would lead the rest of the way, as Hinken's kill closed out the set, 25-20.

In game two the Trolls would lead 8-4 after another ace from Simpson, but the Crimson Wave battled back, scoring four in a row and ten of the next 13 to claim a 14-12 advantage. A run of five consecutive kills put the Trolls back in front, until Calumet tied the score at 21-21. Grace Steenwyk would briefly give Trinity a 22-21 lead with a kill, but the Wave would score four in a row to take the set and even up the match.

Game three looked to go for the Wave, as the visitors built up a late 23-19 edge. Kills from Neighbors and Veldman, followed by an ace from Dej'a Williams closed the gap to 23-22 and forced a Calumet timeout. The Wave would earn set point out of the break, but the Trolls reeled off four in a row, including back-to-back kills from Veldman, rallying from down 24-22 to take the 26-24 win.

After the comeback rally in game three, Trinity would take game four leading start to finish. The Trolls opened with a 6-2 advantage after kills from Neighbors and Williams, then traded points with Calumet throughout the rest of the set to take the win.

The Trolls will hit the road for their final match of the 2022 season, when they travel to Roosevelt on Thursday night. First serve with the Lakers on November 3 is set for 7:00 p.m.
