Martin opens season red hot, Trolls fall in doubleheader

Aurora, Ill. - Despite the snow on the ground outside, Trinity Christian College softball (0-2, 0-0 CCAC) opened the season against Cornerstone University at the Aurora Dome. The Golden Eagles took game one, 10-4, and came back to take the second game, 11-3, in five innings. 

The story of the day was Trolls senior shortstop Alyssa MartinAfter hitting one home run in all of 2021, Martin homered twice in game one and came back and homered a third time in game two. She finished 3-for-6 with three home runs on the day.

GAME 1: Freshman Myleigh Holman made the first start of her collegiate and got off to a fantastic start both in the circle and at the plate. She didn't allow a run in the first two innings and got some run support. Senior Hailey Jurasz singled home Halmon to make it 1-0. Cornerstone got the bats rolling in the third inning though with back-to-back home runs. Martin homered in the fourth inning to cut the lead at 3-2. But the Cornerstone offense was too much too handle and they earned the 10-4 win.

NOTES: 

  • Freshman Alex Hofman dazzled with the glove. She made a handful of plays in her collegiate debut including a diving play in the seventh inning. 
  • Halmon pitched 4.2 innings allowing five runs. She also went 3-for-4 with a run scored at the plate. 
  • The Trolls left nine runners on base.

GAME 2: Cornerstone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Trinity didn't let it phase them. Freshman Jenna O'Brien drobe in the first run of her collegiate career on a groundout to make it a 2-1 game in the second inning. After Cornerstone answered with two runs, it was Martin hitting her third home run of the day in the third inning to drive in two runs. The Trolls trailed at just 4-3. Cornerstone broke loose though with two runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth inning. The game was called in the fifth inning due to time contraints. 

NOTES:

  • Freshman Maddy McyIntyre batted leadoff in both games. In the second game, she went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored. 
  • Despite losing the game 11-3, the Trolls were only outhit 11-7. 

UP NEXT: The Trolls return to the Aurora Dome next Wednesday, Feb. 23 to take on University of Saint Francis (Ind.). First pitch of the doubleheader will be at 10:30 a.m.
