Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - A weekend in Wisconsin resulted in a pair of wins for Trinity Christian College men's volleyball (15-9, 6-4 CCAC) on Saturday. The Trolls took down Viterbo (10-5, 4-4 CCAC) in three sets, in the first match of the day. Then Trinity came back with a dominant performance over Dordt University (7-7, 7-2) with another three set victory.
In the first match against Viterbo, Trinity was tested to the limit. A kill from Viterbo's Juan Banda put the V-Hawks in front at 25-24. The next point, sophomore Nick Mioni found sophomore Alex Costa to tie the score at 25. The two teams went back and forth before Costa came up clutch again with a kill to make it 28-27 Trolls. An attack error from Viterbo gave Trinity a 29-27 win in set one.
Costa was the anchor all afternoon for the Trolls. He punished Viterbo with 29 kills to tie a season high. Trinity took set two 25-20 and in the third set of the day the Trolls had to get back to work. Trinity Christian College trailed 23-21, but didn't let the deficit phase them. Trinity called timeout and found Costa for a kill. Viterbo made it 24-22 on a kill, but Costa earned back-to-back kills to tie the score at 24.
Trinity then trailed 26-25, but rattled off three straight points, including kills from freshman Matt Kentner and senior Jake Ostema.
In match two of the day, Trinity didn't have to sweat much after they took the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-21. In the third though, the Trolls needed another late push. With the match tied at 23. Costa picked up the kill to take the lead. After a Trolls ball handling error to tie the set at 24, Costa grabbed another kill and Trinity finished it off with a block assist from sophomores Mike Hay and Ryan Schmidt.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Costa went for 29 kills in the first match then responded with another 16 kills in the second match of the day. He did it with unbelievable efficiency. Costa had an attack percentage of .444 and .640 in game two.
- Ostema became more agressive in the first match of the day against Viterbo. He had nine kills for the Trolls in games one and two. Ostema also had an attack percentage of .357 in the first match and .500 in match two.
- Senior Adam Becker added 12 digs in the first match and eight more in the second.
- Schmidt had 14 digs in the first match to tie a season high.
- Mioni was handing out assists like they were candy. He had 32 assists in the first match and 28 in the second.
UP NEXT: Trinity will head down the road to take on the #8 ranked Saint Xavier University Cougars (20-8, 9-0 CCAC). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Shannon Center.
