Box Score Palos Heights, Ill. - On senior night for Trinity Christian College men's volleyball (17-10, 7-5 CCAC), the Trolls needed only three sets to put away Cornerstone University (10-18, 1-10). It's the second time this year the Trolls have beaten Cornerstone. Back on Jan. 19, Trinity took down the Eagles in four sets.
On Friday, it was sophomore Alex Costa finishing with 23 kills on an attack percentage of .475% (23-4-40). Seniors Jake Ostema and Adam Becker were honored before the game. Ostema had seven kills and three blocks while Becker had nine digs.
In the first set, with the match knotted at 13, Trinity went on a 4-0 run to widen the gap. Cornerstone kept hanging around and it was Costa making it 21-19 Trolls on a big kill. Sophomore Nick Mioni ended the first set on a service ace and the Trolls hung on 25-22.
In set two, it was Ostema coming up with a kill to push the Trinity lead to 14-9. Costa made it 23-20 with a late kill. he later teamed up with Mike Hay for a block that won the game for Trinity, 25-21.
The final set of the night was the most intriguing. Trinity couldn't shake loose from Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles held a 10-7 lead but the Trolls fought back and trailed at 19-18 after a kill from Costa. He put Trinity on the doorstep of a win with a kill to make it 24-23 but Cornerstone scored the next two points and led 25-24. With their backs against the wall, Trinity stayed alive but then trailed again at 26-25. A kill for Ostema tied the game at 26.
An Ostema block, alongside Mioni, pushed the lead to 27-26 but Cornerstone stayed alive on a kill from Jacob brinks. An Ostema kill followed by a Costa block ended the night on a high note.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Costa is only 21 kills away from reaching 700 for his career. He's at 449 this season.
- On Friday, Becker reached 200 digs for the season. The senior libero is now at 752 digs for his career.
- Ostema has 85 blocks this season and is at 333 for his career. He's also at 612 kills for his career.
- Sophomore Mike Hay added nine kills on an attack percentage of .462% (9-3-13).
- Mioni led the Trolls in passing with 34 assists.
