Box Score Davenport, Iowa - On Wednesday night, Trinity Christian College men's volleyball (12-9, 4-4 CCAC) picked up an important conference victory over St. Ambrose (8-12, 4-5 CCAC). It only took three sets for the Trolls to down the Bees and leave the state of Iowa with a conference victory. Trinity won the match 26-24, 25-19, 25-18.
Trolls sophomore Alex Costa continued his campaign toward player of the year. Costa went for 17 kills on an attack percentage of .300% (17-8-30).
Trinity led for most of the first set but St. Ambrose made their run to tie things up at 23. A kills from senior Jake Ostema put the Trolls a point away from the win, but St. Ambrose answered the challenge to tie it up at 24.
A kill from sophomore Mike Hay followed by a service ace from freshman Arneet Garcha ended the set and the Trolls took the most dramatic set of the evening.
In the second set, Hay came up with a kill to extend the Trinity lead to 15-9. Later in the set, with Trinity leading 19-15, the Trolls went on a 4-0 run to all but put away the set before eventually taking it, 25-19.
The Trolls then came out with a 9-4 lead in the third set and the Trolls continued their great play holding St. Ambrose to an attack percentage of .092%. The match ended when Costa rose up for his 17th and final kill of the night to give Trinity the win.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Costa is putting together a historic season. He's averaging 16 kills per match and is already at 340 kills for the season.
- Senior Adam Becker has been a steady defensive hand since moving to libero. On Wednesday he had nine digs to lead Trinity.
- Ostema did it both offensively and defensively. He had six kills and four blocks.
- Hay went for 10 kills on the night. It's the fifth time he's reach double figures this year.
- Sophomore Nick Mioni had four blocks as well. Mioni was tied with sophomore Ryan Schmidt with 14 assists.
UP NEXT: Trinity will return to DeVos Gymnasium on Thursday, March 10th for another CCAC matchup. The Trolls will host Lincoln College (4-14, 1-7 CCAC) at 7 p.m.
