Box Score 2 Chicago, Ill. - Trinity Christian College softball (10-18-1, 5-7) came off their big win over (RV) St. Ambrose and tested #23 Saint Xavier (18-5, 7-0 CCAC) on Tuesday evening. The Trolls lost both games of the doubleheader, but held a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning of game one. They ultimately fell, 13-5, and dropped the second game, 10-2.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Trinity stayed level-headed despite trailing 4-1 entering the fourth frame. Junior Gia Cozzi put down a bunt and a Saint Xavier throwing error allowed junior Jordan Jones to score. Sophomore Faith Bruinius advanced to third base on the play. Trinity cut the lead in half at 4-2.
Junior Angela Abrand put more pressure on the Saint Xavier defense in the fourth inning. Another Cougar throwing error scored Bruinius and the trolls trailed 4-3. Then it was Freshman Myleigh Halmon giving the Trolls the lead. Her single score two runs and Trinity held a 5-4 advantage.
Saint Xavier came back with a huge bottom of the inning. They scored six times on three hits and took advantage of a Trinity error. They led 10-5. Saint Xavier scored twice in the fifth and once more in the sixth to end the game early and the Trolls were eight-run ruled.
Saint Xavier picked-up right where they left off in the first game. The Cougars scored five runs in the first inning. Back-to-back singles to start the game to each score a run, followed by a three-run home run for Maggie Bailey, gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
With the Trolls trailing 9-0 in the fourth frame, Trinity scored a pair of runs thanks to a two-run bomb from senior Sydni Mitchell. The Trolls trailed 9-2. Saint Xavier added one more run in the fifth inning and took home the 10-2 victory.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Freshman Jenna O'Brien had a 1-for-3 day with a run scored and a walk in game one. She then had a 3-for-3 game in the second of the doubleheader.
- Gia Cozzi provided a nice lift out of the Trolls bullpen. She went four innings and allowed only three earned runs but five total runs in game two. Trinity had two errors in the second game.
