COSTA MESA, Calif. – Trinity Christian opened the women's soccer season in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, as the Trolls rallied back from a second-half deficit to defeat Ottawa (Ariz.) 2-1.
A scoreless first half saw the Spirit (1-1) hold a slight advantage in the attack, out-shooting Trinity (1-0) by a 6-4 margin, with three shots on goal, all stopped by goalkeeper Michelle Urribarri. The Trolls best chance early in the match came in the 16th minute, when Selah Hopkins fired a shot off the crossbar.
In the 58th minute, Ottawa scored the first goal of the day but two minutes later Trinity would find their answer. In her first match with the Trolls, Litzy Corona scored the equalizer on a pass from Hopkins to quickly level the match at 1-1.
The Trolls took the late lead in the 83rd minute, on a deep shot over the middle from Claire Darby. The substitute came on less than a minute before firing the game-winning goal, and the Trolls would run out the rest of the clock to secure the win.
Corona led the team with five shots and four shots on goal. Urribarri finished with four saves to earn the win at keeper.
The Trolls will continue the season-opening west coast swing on Monday, August 22, when they face Vanguard (Calif.). Kickoff from Costa Mesa is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT.
