Trinity takes five-set win over Governors State

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Setter Emma Dykstra recorded her third double-double in Trinity's last four matches, as the Trolls picked up their first conference victory of the year with a five-set win over Governors State at DeVos Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

The Trolls (3-15, 2-6 CCAC) posted their highest attack percentage of the season, with four players recording ten or more kills in the win. Sarah Neighbors led the team with a season-best 15 kills, while Taryn Hinken tallied 14 kills and Trisha Noonan and Brooke Veldman each posted 10.

Dykstra earned the double-double with 21 assists and 12 digs, while adding in four kills and an ace in thew in. Grace Steenwyk collected 24 assists, and the Troll defense was led by Cecilia Zuniga and Shannon Simpson, who each picked up 17 digs on the back line.

Trinity came out strong in the opening set, taking a 7-2 lead with kills from Veldman and Neighbors, and an ace from Zuniga. The Jaguars (3-11, 0-8 CCAC) would make a 7-1 run midway through the set but the Trolls would remain in front from start to finish. Noonan's kill would give Trinity set point, and a Governors State attacking error closed out the set, 25-22.

The visitors rallied in set two, scoring four straight points after a 9-9 start and going on a 10-1 run to claim a 19-10 lead. The Jaguars would close out the set by scoring six of the final eight points to even the match at one game apiece.

A back-and-forth third set led to a 16-16 tie midway through the game, before three straight kills from Noonan fueled a 5-1 run for the Trolls, who led 21-17. The Jaguars rallied for four in a row to even the score again, before Dykstra gave Trinity the lead again with a kill at 22-21. Kills from Hinken and Dykstra led to an ace on set point from Hinken to give the Trolls a 25-22 win.

Governors State took over in game four, leading start to finish with a 14-3 start to the set. The Trolls closed out the set on a 4-2 run but were too far behind to complete the comeback, falling 25-12.

The Trolls started the decisive fifth set with another kill from Hinken and an Abby VanCampen ace for the early 2-0 lead. Trinity remained in front until a four-point rally gave the visitors a 10-7 lead, but the Trolls rallied with four of the next five thanks to a pair of Hinken kills to go back up, 12-10.

Both teams would side out the rest of the way, leading to a 15-13 victory for the Trolls.

Trinity will look to keep the momentum rolling into Thursday night, when they face Indiana South Bend. First serve from the Student Activities Center on the IUSB campus is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Central/7:00 p.m. Eastern.
