Trolls come up short against Judson

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity would take the opening set against the league leaders on Tuesday night, but the Trolls were unable to keep the momentum in a four-set loss to the Judson Eagles inside DeVos Gymnasium.

Taryn Hinken led the way for the Trolls (7-17, 5-5 CCAC), scoring a career-best 17 kills against the CCAC front-runners. Freshman setter Alexis Bartz tallied 44 assists and 10 digs, while Cecilia Zuniga matched her career high with a game-high 23 digs.

Trinity would come out to a 6-4 lead in the first game following a pair of kills from Hinken, and would shortly push the advantage to 10-6 with an ace served up by Bartz. The Eagles (18-2, 10-0 CCAC) rallied with six of the next seven points to move in front 12-11. A kill from Brooke Veldman evened the score again, starting a 7-2 run for the Trolls highlighted by three kills from Dej'a Williams to put Trinity back in front, 17-13.

The Trolls would lead the rest of the game, with Raimey Owens' kill giving Trinity set point, and Williams closing out the set, 25-21.

Judson would take over in game two, scoring the first four points of the set and leading the rest of the way. In game three, the Trolls started with a 3-1 advantage following kills from Owens and Hinken, and a block from Hinken and Bartz. The Eagles responded with 10 of the next 12 points for an 11-5 score on their way to a second consecutive 25-15 win.

In the fourth the Eagles again used an early 4-0 lead to control the rest of the set, although the Trolls would remain competitive and keep the score close down the stretch. Kills from Owens, Hinken, and Mia Querciagrossa closed the gap to a three-point score at 21-18, but the Eagles would close out the night by scoring four of the last five points to earn the win.

The Trolls will look to bounce back next Tuesday night, when they host St. Francis at DeVos Gymnasium. First serve with the Saints is set for 7:00 p.m.
