PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – A second half goal evened the score, but 3rd-seeded Trinity would come up short in the penalty shootout as 6th-seeded Viterbo upset the Trolls in the CCAC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
The visiting V-Hawks (7-5-6) would gain the lead late in the first half on an own goal, but would also hold off a total of five first-half shots from the Trolls (12-3-4), including saves on three shots on target before the break.
The home side would break through in the 56th minute, on Samantha Wind's equalizer, as the sophomore scored her second goal of the season, and second in the last two matches.
Both sides would play even thoughout the final half-hour of regulation and through the twenty minutes of extra time, forcing Trinity's first penalty shootout since 2021.
Jade Maldonado converted the first penalty for the Trolls, but the Viterbo goalkeeper would save the next three, as the visitors would close out the win, 3-1 in four rounds.
The Trolls now wait to see where they will land in the NCCAA North Central Region, with a potential regional playoff match. Further information on the NCCAA tournament will be announced next week.
