Box Score ELGIN, Ill. – Nick Mioni scored a career-high 14 kills, but Trinity were unable to overcome a tough third set loss as the Trolls fell in four to Judson on Tuesday night, 25-16, 25-27, 27-25, 25-18.
Mioni matched Alex Costa with 14 kills apiece, to go along with 14 assists and three blocks. Costa recorded a double-double, pitching in on defense with 13 digs. Ryan Schmidt tallied 26 assists with six digs.
Judson (11-3, 5-0 CCAC) opened the first set with a 9-4 run, and would lead the rest of the way. A four-point rally that included two kills from Costa and a kill and ace from Mioni closed the gap to 9-8, but the Trolls (7-4, 2-4 CCAC) were unable to pull even in the opener.
Trinity bounced back in game two, scoring five in a row highlighted by solo blocks from Mioni and Mike Hay to take a 10-7 lead. Their advantage stretched to four, at 14-10 before Judson came back to tie the game at 16-16. Both teams would have set point as the lead changed multiple times down the stretch; Conner Dargan's block extended the set at 25-25, and Mioni's kill gave the Trolls set point on the next play. A Judson attack error closed out the set and evened the match through two games.
The home team would lead the early portion of game three, before Costa evened the score with a kill at 13-13. Dargan's block at 17-16 gave the Trolls their first lead of the game, which they would hold until Judson scored three straight to move back in front and earn set point, 24-23. Trinity held off two set points but were unable to reclaim the lead, falling at 27-25.
Judson would take a 7-3 advantage early in game four, and wouldn't trail the rest of the night. A four-point rally tied the game at 7-7, but the Eagles responded with three straight points and would remain in front the rest of the way.
The Trolls will look to bounce back on Thursday evening, when they host Cardinal Stritch inside DeVos Gymnasium. First serve with the Wolves is set for 5:00 p.m.
