Box Score 2 PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity Men's Volleyball picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, including the team's first conference win of the year, as the Trolls defeated Viterbo and No. 14 Aquinas (Mich.) during a tri-match inside the DeVos Gymnasium.
The Trolls (6-2, 1-1 CCAC) opened the day with a straight-set win over the V-Hawks (3-3, 1-2 CCAC), 25-14, 25-16, 25-21. Alex Costa led the way with 20 kills and a .467 attack percentage, while Ryan Schmidt tallied 32 assists to go with three kills and five aces. Defensively, Jacob Krefft led the Trolls with 11 digs.
Trinity never trailed until early in the third set, as Viterbo maintained a narrow advantage through the early portions of the game. A 4-1 run for the Trolls that included three kills from Costa put Trinity back in front for the first time, 13-12. Viterbo would battle back, but a four-point run pushed the Trolls lead to 20-17, and the home team would finish off the set by winning five of the final seven points.
In the second game of the day, Trinity had to come back from a tough 25-14 loss in the opening set, but rallied to take the next three, 25-22, 25-22, 25-13. Costa finished with another 20 kills, followed by Nick Mioni's nine.
Schmidt collected 44 assists, while Krefft made 14 digs in the win.
The Saints (3-3) led the first set wire-to-wire, but in game two, an 8-3 run gave the Trolls a 22-18 advantage, allowing them to hold on to the set on a block from Mioni and Conner Dargan.
Trinity had to overcome an 11-2 run in the middle of the third set, but despite trailing 15-8 at one point, scored five straight on two separate occasions to claim a 19-18 lead. Another block, this time from Costa and Mike Hay, secured the win at 25-22.
The fourth set was all Trinity, as the Trolls led start-to-finish to earn the victory over their nationally-ranked opponent.
The Trolls will look to continue the momentum next Tuesday night, February 7, when they travel to take on Calumet in a CCAC matchup. First serve from Whiting, Ind. is set for 7:00 p.m.
