Box Score WHITING, Ind. – Trinity Men's Volleyball picked up their third straight win on Tuesday night, defeating Calumet on the road in four sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-27, 25-18.
Alex Costa led the attack, scoring 17 kills on the night, while Nick Mioni collected 10 kills with a .364 attack percentage. Ryan Schmidt tallied 41 assists with four aces, and Jacob Krefft picked up 12 digs. Mioni and Mike Hay each had six total blocks in the win.
The Trolls (7-2, 2-2 CCAC) jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the opening set after five straight kills, from four different players. Another five-point run later in the set that included three blocks from Hay and Mioni pushed the lead to 18-11, and Chris Dargan's kill closed out the set, 25-19.
In game two, the Crimson Wave (0-2, 0-2 CCAC) would lead 17-14, before a six-point rally gave the Trolls the lead, highlighted by a pair of kills from Dargan. Schmidt's ace gave Trinity set point at 24-20, then a kill from Costa three points later secured the two-set advantage in the match.
The Wave responded in game three, closing out the set on an 11-6 run to earn the win, 27-25. After Trinity took a 19-16 lead, Calumet would score five of six to move in front, 21-20. The Trolls were able to battle back and secure match point with a block at 25-24, but the home team would score three in a row to force a fourth game.
Trinity would reclaim control, leading the fourth set start-to-finish to close out the match. With a narrow 19-17 lead late in the game, the Trolls would run off four straight points, with back to back kills from Mioni and an ace from Schmidt. Costa's ace at 25-18 would close out the night and give the Trolls their first road win of the early season.
The Trolls will look to push the win streak to four on Thursday night, when they travel to Olivet Nazarene, for a rematch of the NCCAA National Invitational championship match. First serve from Bourbonnais is set for 7:00 p.m.
