Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Stepping outside of conference play on Wednesday night, Trinity stumbled on the road, snapping a four-match win streak with a three-set loss to Bethel (Ind.), 25-22, 25-15, 25-20.
Alex Costa led all scorers, with a match-high 14 kills along with four aces and a block assist. Ryan Schmidt collected 15 assists and five digs, while Nick Mioni registered six kills with a .556 attack percentage, 13 assists and four digs.
Bethel (7-12) would lead throughout most of the opening set, scoring a four-point rally midway through the game off three straight service aces. The Trolls would respond late in the game with back-to-back kills from Costa fueling a four-point rally that tied the game at 22-22. The Pilots would score the next three in a row however, taking the opener 25-22.
The home team would lead game two start to finish, opening with a 7-0 run as they built a 14-2 advantage midway through the set. The Trolls would score five in a row late in the game to cut the deficit to 21-14, but that would be as close as they would get as Bethel took a two-set lead on the night.
Trinity led 8-4 early in game three, before the Pilots scored a 5-1 run to pull even at 9-9. Late in the set, a Matt Kentner kill along with a Bethel error made it a one-point Pilot lead, 18-17, but the Pilots scored four straight to regain control. A couple of errors and an ace from Schmidt closed the gap, but Bethel secured the win with the final three points of the night.
The Trolls will look to bounce back as they resume conference play on Thursday night, when they travel to Roosevelt. First serve from Chicago is set for 7:00 p.m.
