Box Score PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity formally clinched home court for the first round of next week's CCAC Tournament on Tuesday night, as the Trolls earned a straight-set victory over Calumet, 26-24, 25-23, 25-15.
Alex Costa finished with a match-high 15 kills in just three sets for the Trolls (16-9, 8-4 CCAC), while serving up four aces in the win. Ryan Schmidt tallied 17 assists with eight digs, while Chris Dargan posted eight kills and a pair of blocks.
The Trolls opened with a 4-0 lead in the first set, on three straight kills followed by a Ryan Schmidt ace. The Crimson Wave (6-7, 5-7 CCAC) would eventually work back into the set, using a four-point rally to take a 14-12 lead midway through the game. Tied at 21-21, the visitors would score three in a row, giving Calumet set point at 24-21. The Trolls responded in the final moments, however, as kills from Mike Hay, Dargan, and Costa would even the score at 24-24. Costa then stole the set for Trinity with back-to-back aces for a 26-24 victory.
The visitors led throughout most of game two, but a six-point rally for the Trolls gave Trinity their first lead of the set at 20-19, with kills from Costa, Dargan, and Matt Kentner leading the way. Calumet would move back in front with three straight points, 23-21, but Kentner's kill started a four-point run for the Trolls, who would take the set 25-23.
The third set was even throughout the first half of the game, with the Wave tying the score with a kill at 10-10. Trinity would take over from there however, finishing out the match on a 10-5 run and scoring eight of the last nine points to take the win. Diego Quiroz would secure the final two points with back-to-back kills for the Trolls' fourth victory in their last five home matches.
The Trolls will close out the regular season on Thursday night, when they host Olivet Nazarene. First serve from DeVos Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.
