Trolls win third straight with victory over Morningside

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – It took a bit longer than planned, but Trinity men's volleyball earned it's third straight win on Thursday night, defeating the visiting Morningside (Iowa) Mustangs in four sets inside DeVos Gymnasium.

Alex Costa led the way as three players finished in double figures for the Trolls (13-7). Costa tallied 17 kills in the win, along with a pair of aces and two blocks for 20 points on the night. Chris Dargan finished with 11 kills and a .444 attack percentage, and Mike Hay collected ten kills with six blocks.

A close opening set, Morningside (7-10) took an early 8-4 lead on a four-point run, and would stay in front until a solo block from Hay followed by a Mustang attacking error tied the game at 23-23. All even at 25-25 moments later, the Trolls took the set with a Dargan kill followed by another attacking error, claiming the set at 27-25.

In game two, the Trolls were in control from start to finish, recording 16 kills with just two errors for a .626 team attacking percentage. Another four-point rally would briefly give the visitors an 8-7 lead, but Trinity responded with a 5-2 run to go up 12-10, and another four-point run highlighted by kills from Costa, Bart Maciczak, and Nick Mioni, to lead 17-12. Taking six of the final nine points, the Trolls secured a two-set advantage in the match with the 25-18 win.

Morningside bounced back in game three, leading by as much as four points at 21-17. Facing set point at 24-22, the Trolls rallied with kills from Dargan to even the score at 24-24 and 25-25. The Mustangs would take the next two points and extend the match with the win, 27-25.

Trailing 13-11 in game four and facing a potential fifth set, the Trolls rallied to put the match away with a 7-1 run that included three kills by Dargan. With a 19-16 lead, Trinity would score the final six in a row to close out the victory, 25-16.

Trinity's next test comes Tuesday night, when they step back into CCAC play and host No. 11 Saint Xavier. First serve from DeVos on March 14 is set for 7:00 p.m.
