Trolls earn sweep over Roosevelt

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity would cruise to their third home win in a row on Tuesday night, as the Trolls earned a straight-set win over the visiting Roosevelt Lakers, 25-15, 25-17, 25-15 inside DeVos Gymnasium.

The win marks Trinity's first in which the Trolls (5-11, 4-2 CCAC) held their opponents to 17 points or less in all three sets since October 2021, when the team knocked off Roosevelt on the road, nearly two years ago.

Dej'a Williams led the attack on Tuesday night, picking up 10 kills while posting a .600 attack percentage. Freshman setter Alexis Bartz tallied 26 assists to go with five kills and five digs, while Jorieliss Caraballo led the defense with 11 digs. Shannon Simpson served up four aces to go with eight digs on the night.

The Trolls jumped out to big early leads in all three sets, beginning with a 12-5 lead in the opener, capped with a four-point rally that included an ace from Simpson and kill from Sarah Neighbors. Another ace from Bartz pushed the lead to 17-8, and with another four-point run in the closing plays, the Trolls would cruise to a comfortable first-set win.

Set two would see the Trolls go up 12-1, as Neighbors posted three kills during a seven-point rally. Roosevelt (5-9, 1-4 CCAC) responded with a 6-1 run to close the gap to 14-8, but Trinity would maintain no worse than a six point lead the rest of the way. Back-to-back kills from Williams would close out the set, 25-17.

After the Lakers took the opening point in game three, the Trolls would roll off ten in a row, building a lead behind kills from Bartz, Neighbors, and Brooke Veldman, as well as a pair of aces from Simpson. Roosevelt would come back with five straight but the damage was done, as Trinity controlled their lead and took the set to earn the sweep.

Trinity will look for their fourth win in their last five conference matches, when they travel to St. Ambrose on Saturday. First serve with the Bees is set for 1:00 p.m.
