BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Trinity Volleyball battled through five sets on Tuesday night, overcoming an early deficit to extend the match but ultimately came up just short, falling at Olivet Nazarene.
The Trolls led late in the opening set, 22-19, but the host Tigers would rally to steal the set, scoring six of the last seven points to win 25-23. Trinity bounced back in game two, using a seven-point run highlighted by a kill and two blocks from both Makenzie Ritsema and Sharide Sykes, to take a 19-14 lead. Sarah Neighbors would get the kill at 22-20, and the Trolls would close out the second-set win after three Olivet errors ended the game at 25-22.
Olivet Nazarene would nearly lead wire-to-wire in game three, going up two sets to one with a 25-17 win. The Trolls again recovered to respond in game four, opening with a 12-4 lead after scoring five straight kills from five different players. Trinity would lead the rest of the way, forcing a fifth game after an ONU service error at 25-19.
In the decisive game, the home team would take a 4-2 advantage, before a kill from Sykes and a Tiger attacking error evened the score at 5-5. Olivet would score four of the next six points to reclaim their lead, 9-7, and despite the Trolls never falling behind by more than three points, Trinity were unable to pull even down the stretch in a 15-12 game.
Sykes led the Trolls, nearly recording a triple-double with 13 kills, 41 assists, and 9 digs. Neighbors tallied ten kills and ten digs, while Makenzi Bennett led the defense with a match-high 18 digs.
The Trolls will close out the regular season on Thursday night, when they return to DeVos Gymnasium to face Governors State. First serve with the Jaguars is set for 7:00 p.m.
