PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity Volleyball took the win in the regular season finale on Thursday night, defeating the Governors State Jaguars in straight sets inside DeVos Gymnasium.
After a slow start in the opening set, the Trolls pulled away in the second half of the game; with a 14-13 lead, Trinity would out-score the Jaguars 11-2 the rest of the way, including eight straight to close out the set. Dej'a Williams picked up three kills during the rally, with Sarah Neighbors getting the last two kills to give the Trolls the opener.
Trinity would go up 8-2 to start game two, but the visitors would respond, scoring six in a row to overcome an 11-8 deficit and take a 14-11 advantage. The Trolls rallied back, tying the game on a block from Williams and Aalyssa Gunn at 18-18, then taking the lead on a kill from Gunn on the next point. Governors State would eventually secure set point at 24-23, but the Trolls held off three potential game-ending points to go on to a 28-26 win. A pair of kills from Williams and an ace from Neighbors would give the Trolls a three-point run to clinch the set.
In the third set the Trolls would nearly lead wire-to-wire, before pulling away with a 6-2 run that put the home team up 18-12. Trinity would close out the night with five of the last six points to secure the win.
Neighbors led the way with 13 kills and 12 digs, her sixth double-double of the season and first in a three-set match. Makenzie Ritsema tallied 10 kills with two blocks. Sharide Sykes tallied 38 assists with 13 digs and five blocks, and Makenzi Bennett led the defense with 16 digs.
With the win, the Trolls clinch the No. 8 seed in next week's CCAC Women's Volleyball Tournament, and will take on regular season champs Viterbo in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, November 12.
