CHICAGO, Ill. – Trinity Men's Volleyball would play three tight games at Roosevelt on Monday night, but the Trolls were unable to get across the finish line in each of them, falling in the CCAC season opener to the Lakers, 25-22, 29-27, 28-26.
Team Leaders
• Alex Costa and Mike Hay finished the night in double figures, posting 15 and 10 kills respectively. Costa finished with a .652 attack percentage, going error-less on 23 attempts, while Hay posted a .533 percentage.
• Ryan Schmidt recorded 36 assists with four digs and a pair of kills.
• Maycor Carrion tallied 15 digs to lead the defense.
Game 1
Roosevelt 25, Trinity 22
• Both sides would trade the lead three times before Roosevelt scored four out of five to move in front, 10-8. A kill from Bart Maciczak and an ace from Costa tied the game, but the Lakers would respond with five in a row to take a 15-10 advantage.
• The Trolls would chip away at the lead with kills from Chris Dargan and Hay at 18-16, but another 4-1 run for the home team pushed the Lakers out in front again, 22-17.
• With set point at 24-19, Trinity would hold off three straight points before falling at 25-22.
Game 2
Roosevelt 29, Trinity 27
• Roosevelt took an early 6-3 lead before a couple of errors and a Dargan kill tied the score at 6-6, in a set that would see 17 ties throughout.
• The Trolls reclaimed the lead at 12-11 on a block from Costa and Maciczak, then pushed the advantage at 14-12 as the duo picked up another block just three plays later.
• The Lakers moved back in front as part of a 6-2 rally at 20-17, before Trinity came out of a timeout to score four of the next five highlighted by an ace and kill rom Samuel Kwan to take the lead 23-22.
• Costa gave the Trolls set point with a kill at 24-23, but the Lakers scored the next two for their own set point at 25-24. Two kills from Costa and one from Hay extended the match, but Trinity were unable to reclaim the lead and would ultimately fall in the extended game, 29-27.
Game 3
Roosevelt 28, Trinity 26
• The Trolls led early, scoring three in a row to go up 7-4, and would lead throughout most of the set.
• A kill from Maciczak followed by a Costa service ace would start a four-point rally that extended the Trolls lead to 20-14, but Roosevelt came back with five in a row to make it a one-point game, 20-19.
• A Roosevelt ace at 22-22 tied the game for the first time since 4-4, and the home team would take the lead at match point on a block, 24-23.
• Three service errors kept Trinity in the match, but the Lakers would eventually close out the night with a 28-26 win.
Next Up
• Trinity will take an eight-day break before resuming conference play on Tuesday, March 5. The Trolls return to DeVos Gymnasium to take on Calumet starting at 7:00 p.m.
