Trolls earn split from weekend trip at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Trinity Men's Volleyball picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, closing out the weekend trip with a four-set victory over hosts Aquinas (Mich.), after dropping a Friday night meeting with Cornerstone (Mich.) in straight sets.

Team Leaders

Alex Costa and Chris Dargan each posted six kills against the Golden Eagles on Friday before scoring 11 kills against the Saints on Saturday. Costa also tallied four aces, seven digs, and six total blocks in the win over Aquinas.

Ryan Schmidt tallied 28 assists over the weekend, while Tim Slattery record 14 against Aquinas.

Maycor Carrion combined for 19 digs over all seven sets, in addition to three aces on Saturday against the Saints.

How it Happened

• The Trolls got off to a slow start on Friday with Cornerstone, falling behind 9-1 in the opening set on the way to a 25-14 loss. Trinity bounced back in game two, taking an early 3-2 lead on back-to-back kills from Chris Dargan, but the Eagles would stay in front throughout most of the set.

• Two Mike Hay service aces and a kill from Nick Mioni highlighted a four-point run late in the second that brought the Trolls to within two, 21-19, but Cornerstone closed out the set with four of the final six points to take a two-set advantage in the match.

• Trinity led by as much as six, at 17-11 in game three, but Cornerstone reeled off nine in a row to take a 20-17 lead late in the set. The home team finished off the match by scoring five of the last seven to secure the win.

• On Saturday morning, Trinity again stumbled out of the gate as Aquinas posted seven unanswered points midway through the opening set on their way to a 25-13 win over the Trolls.

• Trailing in the early portion of game two, 14-10, Trinity responded by holding Aquinas to just four points the rest of the way, closing out the game on a 15-4 run. At set point, Costa and Bart Maciczak combined for the clinching block at 25-18.

• The Trolls took a commanding lead in game three, scoring 11 in a row to go up 14-3 following a Maciczak kill. With a 7-2 run to close out the set, the Trolls would take a 2-1 lead in the match by winning, 25-11.

• Trinity would maintain a small lead throughout most of game four, until a 4-0 run from Aquinas would even out the set at 17-17. A kill from Costa, followed by a block from Maciczak and Cody Figus would start a 7-2 run for the Trolls, with Maciczak scoring the clinching kill at 25-20.

Next Up

• Trinity makes their season debut inside DeVos Gymnasium on Thursday night, February 8, when they host College of DuPage (Ill.) for an exhibition match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
