PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Seniors Alex Costa and Ryan Schmidt re-wrote the Trinity Men's Volleyball record books on Tuesday night, as the Trolls picked up a five-set victory on the road at St. Ambrose.
Team Leaders
• Costa finished the night with a team-high 17 kills, giving the Oak Lawn, Ill. native 1,373 for his career and surpassing Chad Meeuwse (2000-2003) for Trinity's all-time kills record.
• Schmidt tallied 29 assists to lead the team, as the Carroll, Ohio native overtook Danny Lawrence (2017-2020) atop the all-time assists leaderboard.
• Chris Dargan and Nick Mioni both finished in double figures, finishing with 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
• Maycor Carrion led the defense with a match-high 13 digs.
Game 1
Trinity 25, St. Ambrose 19
• The Bees would open with an early 6-3 lead, but Trinity would claim the lead with five of the next six points, including two aces from Costa and another from Carrion.
• Trailing 9-8, the Trolls reeled off seven straight points highlighted by two kills from Dargan and a Tim Slattery service ace to go up 15-9.
• Trinity would lead the rest of the way; after St. Ambrose closed the gap to 18-16, a Costa kill would start a three-point rally and the Trolls would outscore their opponents 4-1 over the final five points to take the set.
Game 2
Trinity 25, St. Ambrose 22
• A quick three-point run for the Bees would give St. Ambrose another 6-3 advantage in game two, which they would hold until a block from Bart Maciczak, Costa, and Mioni would tie the game at 9-9.
• A solo block from Maciczak briefly gave the Trolls the lead 10-9, before St. Ambrose scored four of the next five to lead 13-11.
• Both sides traded the lead again until back-to-back kills from Dargan and Mike Hay put the Trolls in front 17-15. The visitors would remain in front the rest of the way, using a 4-1 rally down the stretch that included two Mioni kills to pull away, 24-20.
Game 3
St. Ambrose 25, Trinity 17
• The Bees would lead wire-to-wire, opening with three straight points and a 6-1 run to start the set.
• Trinity would get to within three points on a block from Maciczak and Costa at 13-10, but St. Ambrose came back with three in a row to pull away again. A 5-1 run that pushed the score to 23-15 would put the game out of reach.
Game 4
St. Ambrose 25, Trinity 21
• St. Ambrose again used an early rally to lead from start to finish, scoring the first four points of the set and going on to lead 8-4 a few plays later.
• The Trolls would pull to within a point at five different times throughout the set, with the last one coming at 17-16 on Slattery's service ace. The Bees would even the match at two sets apiece by closing out the game with three of the last four points.
Game 5
Trinity 15, St. Ambrose 8
• The Trolls wasted no time in game five, scoring six in a row to start the decisive set. Kills from Dargan and Mioni, and a kill and ace from Costa fueled the rally that would allow Trinity to lead from start to finish.
• The Bees would pull to within four with a kill at 9-5, but a service error followed by an ace from Hay put the Trolls in front 11-5.
• Dargan would close out the night, scoring kills on three of Trinity's final four points to secure the win.
