ELGIN, Ill. – Trinity Men's Volleyball secured their spot in next week's CCAC Tournament on Thursday night, as the Trolls earned a four-set victory on the road over the Judson Eagles.
Team Leaders
• Alex Costa led the Trinity attack, scoring 16 kills and two total blocks on the night.
• Ryan Schmidt tallied 24 assists to go with a kill and four digs.
• Bart Maciczak made five total blocks, including three solos.
• Mike Hay picked up 10 kills with a .471 attack percentage, along with three aces.
Game 1
Trinity 25, Judson 19
• Both sides traded small leads early on, before the Trolls scored an 8-2 run to lead 12-8, highlighted by kills from Maciczak, Nick Mioni, and Diego Quiroz.
• Judson would pull back to within a point twice, at 13-12 and 16-15, but a kill and an ace from Hay on back-to-back points started a 5-1 run for the Trolls that put them back in control, 21-16.
• Leading 21-19, Trinity would close out the set on a 4-0 run, with a block from Maciczak and Costa clinching the win at 25-19.
Game 2
Trinity 25, Judson 18
• Trailing 5-4 early in the second set, a kill by Hay started a 4-1 run that put the Trolls in front, 8-5. Another four-point rally that included two straight aces from Hay pushed the lead to 13-7.
• The Trolls would pull away throughout the rest of the game, with Quiroz's kill at game point giving Trinity a two-set lead on the night, at 25-18.
Game 3
Judson 26, Trinity 24
• The Trolls started strong, scoring the first three points of the set and opening with a 5-1 lead. Judson would battle back, scoring six of the next eight to even the score at 7-7.
• Kills by Costa and Hay would help put Trinity back in front at 12-9, but Judson used a five-point rally to claim a three-point lead, at 19-16.
• Costa's kill followed by a service ace from Caden Figus held off two game points for the Trolls, tying the set at 24-24, but Judson came back with a kill and a Troll attacking error to take the set and extend the match, 26-24.
Game 4
Trinity 25, Judson 23
• A back-and-forth game throughout, neither side would take more than a two-point advantage until Costa's kill put the Trolls ahead late, 21-18.
• Trinity were unable to hold serve down the stretch, but three straight service errors from Judson kept the Trolls in front, until Costa ended the night with a kill at 25-23.
Next Up
• The Trolls will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, as they host Cumberland (Tenn.) for a non-conference match at DeVos Gymnasium. First serve with the Phoenix is scheduled for approximately 12:00 p.m., but will follow the earlier neutral-site matchup between Cumberland and Olivet Nazarene that is set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
