Trolls sweep Calumet in marathon doubleheader

WHITING, Ind. – Trinity Softball officially punched their ticket to the CCAC Tournament on Wednesday night, in dramatic fashion as the Trolls swept Calumet on the road, winning the opener 3-2 before a 12-inning marathon win, 12-9.

Game 1
Trinity 3, Calumet 2
WP: Halmon (7-9)
LP: Lanman (3-9)

The Trolls struck early, as a leadoff single from Charlie Sartoris in the 1st inning followed by a stolen base allowed Alex Hofman to drive in the first run of the day. Hofman later scored in the inning on a fielding error to give Trinity an early 2-0 advantage.

Calumet would be held to just two base hits over the first six innings, before breaking through in the bottom of the 7th. Trinity would tack on an insurance run in the top half of the inning, on Myleigh Halmon's run-scoring double. The Crimson Wave loaded the bases with just one out, then scored twice on a two-out, two-run single. Another single nearly brought home the game-tying run, but Maddy McIntyre's throw from right field would get the runner out at the plate to end the game.

Halmon earns her seventh win of the season, working around six hits and a pair of earned runs with two strikeouts.

Sartoris finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Giulia Cianfriglia also picked up a pair of singles, finishing 2-for-3 in the win.

Game 2
Trinity 12, Calumet 9 (12 innings)

WP: Lowden (2-5) LP: Ines (2-5)

The Trolls scored another 1st inning run in game two, as Jolie Robertson drove home Charlie Sartoris after another leadoff single. A two-out, two-run single in the top of the 2nd from McIntyre would push the Trolls' lead to 3-0.

Calumet would take their first lead of the day in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring one run on a bases-loaded walk, another on a sac fly, and two more on a Trinity error to move in front, 4-3.

Trinity reclaimed the lead in the 4th inning, as Alex Hofman cleared the bases with a single to right field. Hofman would later score on a sac fly to put the visitors ahead 7-4.

After Faith Bruinius scored on an error in the top of the 5th, the Crimson Wave would come back with four in the bottom half of the inning, on a pair of hits and an error, to even the score at 8-8.

The game remained tied until the top of the 11th, when a Calumet error and back-to-back singles from Hailey LaGrange and Bruinius loaded the bases. Cianfriglia would give the Trolls the lead with a single to left, but Trinity were unable to add to their lead, leaving the bases loaded during the rally.

A two-out single for Calumet, followed by an RBI triple would tie the game in the bottom of the 11th to extend the game.

Two errors helped the Trolls to finally break through in the top of the 12th, as Robertson's double to left field put Trinity in front again. Bruinius added to the lead with a two-out single, scoring Robertson and Hofman. Calumet would put two runners on base in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score as the Trolls secured the sweep.

Peyton Lowden earned her second win of the year, throwing seven innings of relief with six strikeouts and just one run allowed.

McIntyre would finish 4-for-6 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Robertson went 4-for-5 while drawing a walk, driving in three RBI and scoring twice.
