PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Trolls picked up their second win in the last three days on Saturday afternoon, as Trinity Volleyball earned a straight-set victory over Saint Xavier inside DeVos Gymnasium.
Sharide Sykes led the Trinity attack, as the only player on either side to reach double figures with ten kills. Alexis Bartz tallied 12 assists, while Jorieliss Caraballo anchored the defense with 15 digs.
Trinity nearly led the first set start-to-finish, but a four-point rally for Saint Xavier would put the visitors in front at 8-7. The Trolls responded with five of the next six points, with an ace from Sykes giving Trinity a 12-9 lead. Trinity would close out the set with four of the last five to take the win, 25-17.
A five-point rally early in the second set, highlighted by kills from Aalyssa Gunn and Aolani Cannon, gave Trinity an early 6-3 advantage. Two kills from Sykes in the middle of a four-point run would stretch the lead to 13-8, as the Trolls controlled the lead the rest of the way in a 25-18 win in game two.
Saint Xavier rallied in game three, using a 7-1 run to take a 10-5 lead early in the set. The Trolls would come back to tie the game at 12-12 on a block from Sarah Neighbors and Mackenzie Ritsema, but were unable to take the lead as the Cougars remained in front later in the set, 21-19. A kill and an ace from Sykes on back-to-back points would tie the game at 21-21. After a pair of kills for Saint Xavier, the Trolls would run off four straight points, with the game-winning kill from Dej'a Williams to close out the day, 25-23.
With the win, the Trolls move into a tie for 3rd in the CCAC standings; Trinity will look to make it three wins in a row on Tuesday, when they travel to St. Francis – currently 2nd in the league – for a matchup beginning at 7:00 p.m.
