AURORA, Ill. – A 7th-inning rally would lead to a walk-off victory for the Trolls, as Trinity would end up splitting a doubleheader with Bethel (Ind.) inside the Aurora Dome on Wednesday. Trinity picked up a 4-3 win in dramatic fashion before falling 15-2 in game two.
The Pilots would take an early lead in the opener, with a two-run home run in the top of the 1st. Another run would cross the plate in the top of the 3rd, after a leadoff double led to an RBI single to put Bethel ahead 3-0.
Trinity got off to a slow start at the plate, with their first baserunner coming on Caitlin Hernandez's walk in the 3rd inning. Erianna Claudio's leadoff single in the bottom of the 4th would be the Trolls first base hit of the day, but a line-drive double play would kill the rally.
The Trolls would leave two more runners on base in the 5th, and another in the 6th, before breaking through in the bottom of the 7th. A pinch-hit leadoff single from Kamryn Koontz set the table, followed by back-to-back walks from Ariana Ikis and Claudio to load the bases.
Myleigh Halmon would put the first runs on the board with a two-out, two-RBI single, and in the next at-bat Anna Lisa Fluder would hit a full-count pitch back up the middle to drive in the tying and winning runs.
In the second game of the day, Bethel would dominate at the plate, scoring 15 runs on 17 hits. The Pilots would pull away with five runs in the 2nd, and four more in the 3rd and 4th to take a run-rule win after five innings.
Fluder finished the day with two RBI and a stolen base in game one, while Halmon went a combined 2-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored on the day.
In the circle, Halmon earned her first win of the season, striking out eight batters over seven innings in game one.
The Trolls return to the Aurora Dome next week, when they host Clarke (Iowa) for a doubleheader on Wednesday, February 26.
