DAVENPORT, Iowa – Ethan Oros would record a career-high 13 kills as Trinity would push the host Bees to four sets on Wednesday night, but the Trolls would ultimately fall short at St. Ambrose, 25-13, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18.
After scoring the first point of the night on a St. Ambrose service error, the Trolls would fall behind after a five-point run for the Bees, who would hold the lead the rest of the way in the first game.
In the second set, the Trolls took an early lead with a six-point rally highlighted by two kills from Oros and a pair of Samuel Kwan service aces for a 7-3 lead. The home team would move back in front with a 5-0 run to claim a 13-10 advantage. Another five-point rally increased the St. Ambrose lead to 20-13 en route to the two-set lead in the match.
Game three would be close early, with neither side taking more than a one- or two-point lead until the Trolls would slowly build up a 17-13 advantage on a kill from Sam Cain. At 23-19, the Bees would score four straight to tie the game, and would hold off set point at 24-23 before kills from Cain and C.J. Lafin secured the set for Trinity.
Looking to force a fifth set, the Trolls stumbled early in game four, as St. Ambrose jumped out to an 8-2 lead after scoring the first five points of the game. A block from Caden Figus, Brendan Rushton, and Cain would cap a three-point run and bring the Trolls back to within a point at 16-15, but St. Ambrose would hold their early lead throughout the set to close out the night.
Trinity will look to bounce back this weekend, when they travel to Viterbo for a tri-match on Saturday. The Trolls will first face the V-Hawks in a CCAC matchup at 1:00 p.m., before taking on Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) in a non-conference rematch at 3:00 p.m.
