Trolls fall in doubleheader to Saints

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity would pile on a combined 28 base hits over Friday's doubleheader, but a late rally in both games from visiting St. Francis would result in a pair of wins for the Saints, as the Trolls fell in CCAC play 11-7 in the opener, and 7-6 in game two at the Schaaf Athletic Complex.

The Saints would open the day with a four-run 1st inning, but the Trolls would rally in the bottom half of the frame, scoring three runs highlighted by a two-RBI single from Shane Jones. After St. Francis added another run in the top of the 2nd, the first three batters would reach base for Trinity in the bottom of the 2nd, allowing the Trolls to tie the game on Carter Chaney's sacrifice and a Saints fielding error.

The Trolls would take their first lead of the day in the 3rd, on Zach Hesse's sac fly, and an RBI double from Josh Pilgrim that put the home team ahead 7-5. St. Francis would battle back to even the score again with a run in the 4th and 5th innings, before posting four runs in the top of the 7th to take the opening game win.

Jones and Taiki Kondo each finished with three base hits for the Trolls, with Jones collecting two RBI and two doubles.

After both teams traded 1st-inning runs, the Trolls moved back in front in the bottom of the 2nd, on Kondo's RBI double to left center, scoring courtesy runner Bradley Johnson. The Saints would post three runs in the 3rd and one more in the 4th to claim a 5-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th, the first five Trolls would reach base, as Jones and Casey Folkerts each posted RBI singles as part of a three-run rally that tied the game at 5-5. The Trolls would take their first lead of the game in the 6th, on Chaney's RBI double, scoring Kondo.

St. Francis would post another late rally, reclaiming the lead in the 8th inning with two runs on two hits and a hit batter, all with two outs in the frame.

The top of the Trinity lineup led the way at the plate, as the top four hitters of Kondo, Hector Mendoza, Chaney, and Jones combined to go 12-for-18, with four RBI and three runs scored. Kondo finished 4-for-4 from the leadoff position with an RBI, two doubles, and three runs scored.

The Trolls will close out the series with the Saints tomorrow afternoon, when they travel to Joliet and take on St. Francis with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
