Trolls win series over Calumet with split doubleheader

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Trolls secured the series win over Calumet on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with a dominant offensive showing in game two at the Schaaf Athletic Complex.

The Trolls would be held without a hit until the 4th inning, when Shane Jones broke the drought with a two-out single to left. Calumet would take the lead in the bottom of the 2nd with three runs on one hit and three walks, then tack on another run in the 3rd for the 4-0 lead.

Jones, Omar Wright, and Benson Holleman would come away with base hits, and Taiki Kondo would reach base on a hit by pitch as the Trolls would generate just four baserunners in the game.

Drew Wanicki and Silas Noe each pitched scoreless frames, and Christopher Neilsen would go four innings with five strikeouts.

Trinity quickly took a 4-0 lead after the first half-inning, as the first four batters reached base and Jones collected two RBI to open the scoring. In the top of the 3rd, Hector Mendoza increased the Trolls' lead with a two-out RBI, scoring Wright for a 5-0 advantage.

The Trolls would add two more runs in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to pull away. Calumet would get a run in the bottom of the 6th, but another outburst for Trinity in the top of the 7th would add three more runs to the board and end the game early on run rule.

Trinity would record 15 base hits in the win – all singles – led by Mendoza's 4-for-5 perofrmance with four RBI and one run. Folkerts finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, and Carter Chaney finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs.

Matthew Toledo and Matthew Rangel combined for three shutout innings, and Gunnar Bettenhausen picked up the win after four innings with one run allowed.

The Trolls now prepare for a week outside of league play, beginning on Wednesday with a trip to Grace (Ind.) on Wednesday, April 2.
