PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Trolls would play their opponents tough in each set on Tuesday night, but a struggling defensive performance would lead to a straight-set loss as Trinity fell to Calumet 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 inside DeVos Gymnasium.
The visiting Crimson Wave would post a .354 attack percentage on the night (41-13-79), compared to Trinity's .085 (24-18-71). The Trolls took advantage of a season-high 17 service errors from Calumet to compete down the stretch of each game.
Neither side could take more than a two-point lead in the opening set, until a 6-1 Calumet run gave the visitors a 19-16 advantage. The Wave would hold the lead the rest of the way, as the Trolls twice pulled to within a point but were unable to even the score down the stretch.
Trinity would hold a narrow lead through the early portions of game two, before a 7-2 run from Calumet gave the visitors a 16-13 advantage. Similar to the opening set the Trolls would keep within a point or two but never pulled even as the Wave took a two-set lead in the match. Calumet would lead game three nearly wire-to-wire, opening with a 4-2 run and staying in front the rest of the way.
Risser led the Trolls with five kills on the night, while Tim Slattery posted 13 assists and a match-high four aces.
The Trolls are back in DeVos tomorrow night, when they step outside of conference play to host Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
