Trolls fall in five in home opener with Tigers

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Raimey Owens and Sarah Neighbors each finished with a double-double, but Trinity would come up just a few points short in the CCAC and home opener on Wednesday night, falling in five sets to visiting Olivet Nazarene inside DeVos Gymnasium.

The Trolls fell behind 12-3 in the opening set before rallying, tying the match at 23-23 on an ace from Jorieliss Caraballo. A kill from Neighbors at 26-25 gave Trinity set point, but the Tigers would take the opening set, scoring four of the last five points to win, 29-27.

Using a 6-1 rally in game two, the Trolls built a 19-15 lead and would stay in front the rest of the way. Neighbors would close out the 25-21 win on the team's third set point to even the match at one set apiece.

Game three would see the Trolls jump out to a 7-1 lead before Olivet scored six out of seven to take an 11-10 advantage. The Tigers would hold the lead the rest of the way for a 25-22 win in the set.

Another early advantage in game four would help the Trolls extend the match, opening on a 12-4 run. Olivet would climb back, but at 19-19, Trinity would reel off six straight points with kills from Owens, Sharide Sykes, and Makenzie Ritsema to force a fifth set.

A back-and-forth final set would see kills from Owens and Dej'a Williams give Trinity a 10-9 advantage, but Olivet would score five of the next six to take control and eventually close out the match with a 15-12 win.

Owens would finish with a team-high 16 kills and a .333 attack percentage, along with 12 digs. Sykes tallied 34 assists with 14 digs and two blocks. Neighbors picked up 11 kills and 11 digs for the double-double, while Williams collected 13 kills on the night. Ritsema registered a team-high .474 attack percentage, collecting 11 kills.
