COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Trinity Christian baseball team competed in its second series of the season against Lindsey Wilson over the weekend, dropping the opener before bouncing back to win the next two games and secure the series victory.
GAME 1: Lindsey Wilson 12, Trinity Christian 4
Trinity struck first in the opening inning when
Taiki Kondo ripped an RBI single to center, scoring
Caden Quigg for a 1-0 lead. The Blue Raiders answered quickly, plating four runs in the bottom half of the inning to go in front 4-1.
Lindsey Wilson added two runs in the second and three more in the fourth to stretch its advantage to 9-1. The Trolls got back on the board in the fifth when
Josh Pilgrim lifted a sacrifice fly to score
Shane Jones from third.
In the sixth,
Hector Mendoza drove in a run the hard way after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home
Nicholas Donelan. The Blue Raiders responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 12-3.
Zach Heese added an RBI single in the seventh, scoring Pilgrim to cap the scoring at 12-4.
Jacob Houlihan provided a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing a scoreless fifth inning in relief.
GAME 2: Trinity Christian 4, Lindsey Wilson 2 (8 innings)
The Trolls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning.
Shane Jones reached on a fielder's choice, scoring
Brodie Mayberry to open the scoring. On the next play, Kondo singled to right to drive in Jones and double the advantage.
Lindsey Wilson answered in the sixth with two runs to even the score at 2-2.
Trinity responded in the eighth, rallying for two runs to take control. Heese delivered an RBI single to left to score Kondo, and Donelan later crossed the plate on a Pilgrim groundout to make it 4-2.
Gordon Wineland secured his first save of the season by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the eighth.
GAME 3: Trinity Christian 4, Lindsey Wilson 2
Carrying momentum into the series finale, the Trolls wasted no time, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Mendoza started the scoring with an RBI double to left, bringing home Kondo.
Two batters later, Mayberry delivered a two-RBI single to right to score Mendoza and Ty Chaney Jr., pushing the lead to 3-0. The Blue Raiders responded with a two-run home run in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Pilgrim added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly that scored Heese, giving Trinity a 4-2 lead. Chaney added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning after hitting a two-run double to left, scoring
Jayden Hamilton and Quigg.
Silas Noe (1-0) recorded the win in relief after throwing five scoreless innings, only allowing one hit and throwing one walk.
