GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Trinity Christian College men's volleyball team was unable to overcome a slow start as the Trolls fell in straight sets to host NCAA Division III Calvin University on Tuesday (Feb. 24).
SET 1: Calvin 25, Trinity Christian 9
Calvin jumped out to an early 5-0 lead to start the match. Sam Cain tried to get the Trolls back in it after recording a pair of kills, but the deficit was already too large.
Daniel Whaley and Vinnie Arias ended a few rallies by the Knights with kills, but Calvin was too much to handle, winning the first set 25-9.
SET 2: Calvin 25, Trinity Christian 17
Calvin led 3-1 early before Trinity Christian responded with four straight points, capped by a kill from Juvantae Thompson to make it 5-3. Seth Summers extended the lead to 9-6 with a service ace.
The Knights answered with four of the next five points to take an 11-10 lead. Both teams traded points over the next several rallies.
Conner Dargan cut the deficit to 19-17 with a kill, but that would be the final point for the Trolls. Calvin closed the set on a 6-0 run to secure a 25-17 win.
SET 3: Calvin 25, Trinity Christian 18
TCC led 9-6 early in the set after a kill from Dargan. Calvin responded with five straight points to take an 11-9 advantage.
The Trolls trimmed the deficit to 18-16 late in the set, but the Knights finished on a 7-2 run to claim the set 25-18 and complete the 3-0 sweep.
