PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. -- The Trinity Christian baseball team took two of three games in its series against Lawrence Technological University on Friday (Feb. 27). The Trolls won the first game 7-4 and the second 4-2 before falling 3-2 in the finale.
GAME 1: Trinity Christian 7, Lawrence Tech 4
Trinity Christian jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Hector Mendoza opened the scoring with an RBI single that drove in Zach Heese.
Josh Pilgrim added two more RBIs with a two-run single to center, scoring Mendoza and Taiki Kondo. LTU responded with three runs of its own — two in the second and one in the fourth — to tie the game at 3-3.
The Trolls answered with three runs across the fourth and fifth innings. Ty Chaney Jr. drove in Jayden Hamilton with an RBI single.
Hamilton later made it 5-3 with an RBI single that scored Caden Quigg. Later in the inning, Shane Jones reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Benson Holleman to score for a 6-3 lead.
The Blue Devils added a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-4. Pilgrim collected his third hit and third RBI of the game, driving in Brodie Mayberry to extend the lead to 7-4.
Silas Noe improved to 2-0 on the season after throwing 5 2/3 innings of four-run ball, allowing six hits, walking four and striking out six. Noah McFadzean recorded his first save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of relief.
GAME 2: Trinity Christian 4, Lawrence Tech 2
Lawrence Tech took an early 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, but its offense stalled the rest of the way. Hamilton drove in Holleman with an RBI single in the fifth to trim the deficit to 2-1.
An inning later, Holleman gave the Trolls a 3-2 lead with a two-run double to left-center, scoring Mayberry and Kondo. Holleman later scored when Hamilton reached on a fielding error, making it 4-2.
Brendan Fleming received a no-decision after throwing five innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, walking one and striking out three. Gordon Wineland earned the win in relief after tossing 1 1/3 innings and striking out two.
Drew Wanicki picked up his first save of the season, recording the final two outs in the seventh.
GAME 3: Lawrence Tech 3, Trinity Christian 2
Lawrence Tech scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning for an early 2-0 lead. The Trolls responded with a run in the second and another in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
Holleman drove in Mendoza with an RBI single in the second to cut the deficit in half. In the third, Mendoza tied the game with an RBI single to left that scored Jones.
The Blue Devils regained the lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, making it 3-2. Matthew Toledo (0-2) took the loss after going six innings, allowing five hits, three runs (one earned), walking one and striking out three.
