Box Score Crestwood, Ill. - An eighth inning comeback for Trinity Christian College baseball (5-13, 1-4 CCAC) on Tuesday morning sent the game into extra-innings against Roosevelt University (8-9, 2-0 CCAC). The Trolls took a 5-4 lead in the 11th inning on a single from senior Nick Andersen but Roosevelt struck twice with two outs in the bottom of the 11th and walked it off, 6-5.
Trinity dropped their third consecutive conference game. Junior Hunter Slaats had himself a day at the plate. Slaats went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Senior Jordan Cruz provided a nice lift on the mound. The Trolls starting pitcher allowed only one run over three innings of work.
Trinity trailed 1-0 in the sixth frame and it was a Slaats single to score senior Nicolas Gutierrez and Tyler Petersen giving Trinity their first lead of the game at 2-1. After Roosevelt scored three runs in the home half of the sixth, Slaats did damage again.
After senior Tyler Petersen led the eighth inning off with a walk, Slaats smashed the second home run (1) of his career to tie the game at four.
In the 11th inning, Andersen drilled a single to score freshman Trevor Turco from second base. Trinity led 5-4.
Junior Adam Herron was humming along out of the Trinity bullpen. He had pitched the prvious five innings for the Trolls and hadn't allowed a run. In the 11th inning, a leadoff walk started the Roosevelt rally. A sacrifice bunt moved the Lakers Jesus Gomez to second base. Herron induced a groundout for the second out of the inning and Gomez stayed put at second base.
Another walk put runners on first and second base and a wild pitch advanced Gomez to third base. Roosevelt had men on the corners. Back-to-back hit batters allowed the tying run to score. Hunter Darst singled and Roosevelt walked it off, 6-5.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Despite earning the loss, the 5.2 innings for Herron were the most of his Trinity career. His previous long was three innings on March 4th against William Penn.
- The Trolls drew seven walks for the game. Petersen had two of them.
UP NEXT: Trinity will now play a doubleheader on Friday, March 25th at Olivet Nazarene (11-14, 4-2 CCAC). The first game will start at 1 pm and will be nine innings. The second game will be seven innings and the Trolls will be the home team. Trinity will play one game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against the Tigers at Schaaf Athletic Complex.
