Moralez on fire, Trolls fall in series at Midland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Fremont, Neb. - Trinity Christian College baseball (2-9) dropped all three games of their three-game series with Midland University (9-1) on Monday and Tuesday night. Trinity fell in one nine inning game on Monday, 29-3. The Trolls dropped both games of the doubleheader Tuesday, by finals of 12-4 and 13-9.

GAME 1 – Midland 29, Trinity Christian College 3

WP: Tyler Seebaum (1-0)

LP: Mike Moralez (0-1)

After a long day of travel the day prior, the Trolls had a baseball game to play. Trinity dropped the first game after struggling to keep the Midland bats asleep. The eight-run rule went into effect after the Trolls did not score in the seventh inning. Midland led 13-0 after the first four innings, but it was a 14-run fifth inning to score nearly half of Midland's runs for the game.

The Trinity defense committed six errors. The offense for the Trolls was led by junior Michael Moralez, sophomore Preston Moore and senior Nic Guttierez. They each had two hits.

 GAME 2 – Trinity Christian 4, Midland University 12

WP: Jay Lambert (2-0)

LP: Hunter Slaats (1-1)

Despite the 12-4 loss, Trinity got off to a great start thanks to Moralez. His two-run home run made it 2-0 Trolls. Moralez wasn't done though. As Trinity trailed in the fifth inning, senior Nick Andersen belted a solo home run and Moralez came up next and make it back-to-back jacks. The Trolls trailed 7-4.

Andersen has hit two home runs on the season while Moralez is up to four.

Midland used the long ball in the fifth inning on a solo home run from Trey Rodriguez. Midland led 9-4. In the sixth inning, after a sacrifice fly made it 10-4, a two-run home run from Connor Petersen gave the Warriors a 12-4 advantage.

GAME 3 – Trinity Christian 9, Midland 13

The Trolls offense popped their way to a big lead early in the game, but a 10 run fourth inning did them in and the Trolls fell 13-9.

After Midland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Trolls came back in the second inning and sophomore Oliver Carmody belted a double to get Trinity on the board. Carmody scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Trinity led 2-1.

A home run and a sacrifice fly gave Midland the 3-2 lead after two, but it was the Trolls with a seven-run third inning. Junior Jordan Veldman drove in a run on a double, then it was freshman Alexander Avila with a basehit to make it a 4-3 Trinity lead.

With Trinity leading 6-3 in the inning, Moralez brought home two more runs with a single and the lead was 8-3. Veldman finished off the inning with another RBI. He singled to score Andersen and the Trinity lead was 9-3.

The Warriors came back though with a 10-spot in the fourth and never relinquished the lead. The 10 runs scored on eight hits and two Trinity errors. Moralez and Veldman each had three hits for the game while Avila had two hits.

NOTES & NUMBERS:

  • Moralez went 7-for-11 at the plate over the three days with three home runs and six RBIs.
  • Veldman went 3-for-4 in the final game of the series. It was the first three-hit game of his Troll career.
  • Andersen went hitless in the last game of the series and ended a remarkable eight game hitting streak. He was 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI in the previous two games combined.
  • Junior Josh Bakke went 0.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in game two. He hasn't allowed a run in six innings this year.

UP NEXT: The Trolls will return to Schaaf Athletic Complex on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Trinity will take on Missouri Valley College (7-6) Wednesday in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. On Thursday the Trolls will play one nine inning game at 11:00 a.m. against the Vikings.
