Trolls stumble down the stretch with Texas Wesleyan

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – Trinity got off to a strong start in their Texas road trip on Friday afternoon, but turnovers would prove costly against last season's NAIA sweet 16 participants, falling to Texas Wesleyan 60-55.

Team Leaders

Sedona Anderson led the Trolls in scoring with 12 points, going 4-for-7 from three-point range.

Hannah Schuringa finished with 10 points and six rebounds, as well as three blocks.

• Desire Berrian pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in 19 minutes of work off the bench.

Amena Alexander posted seven points, seven assists, and five steals on the day.

How it Happened

The Trolls jumped out to a 9-3 lead following a free throw from Sarah Page at the 8:12 mark of the first quarter, and would stay in front throughout the rest of the opening period. Trinity would lead by as much as eight after a pair from the charity stripe by Kyla Smith made it a 20-12 game with 2:03 left in the first.

• Trinity would stay in front until a five-minute scoring drought late in the second quarter allowed the Rams to go on a 9-0, taking a 29-24 lead with 1:23 on the clock. Back-to-back threes from Leilani Murray and Anderson briefly put the Trolls back in front, but a bucket in the closing seconds would give Texas Wesleyan a 31-30 halftime advantage.

• Scoring the first six points of the third quarter, including a pair of buckets from Alexander, Trinity reclaimed a 36-31 lead by the 6:55 mark. The Trolls would go cold again however, with just one field goal over the final five minutes of the quarter, allowing Texas Wesleyan to move back in front, 47-42 going into the fourth.

• A layup from Berrian with 4:36 left in regulation would put Trinity in front, 53-52, before Texas Wesleyan inched back out in front with three field goals over the next two possessions. Schuringa's jumper with 3:45 left tied the game at 55-55, but the Trolls were unable to find any more points down the stretch as the Rams closed the game on an 8-2 run over the final 4:23.

Next Up

• The Trolls wrap up the road trip on Saturday, when they take on Our Lady of the Lake (Tex.) at 2:00 p.m.
