Box Score 2 PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity baseball opened the conference season with a split doubleheader on Wednesday, dropping the opener by a 1-0 margin before defeating Calumet 5-4 in game two.
Michael Moralez led the Trolls (7-13, 1-1 CCAC) at the plate, going a combined 3-for-6 with a walk and two runs over both games. Trinity had two solid pitching outings, with Gunnar Bettenhausen throwing 6.2 innings with five strikeouts in a tough loss, and Jake Ostrowski going six innings without an earned run and seven strikeouts to earn the win in game two.
The Trolls (7-3, 1-1 CCAC) trailed late in the second game, but a key error in the bottom of the 8th led to a three-run inning to give Trinity the lead. After two batters reached base, a wild pitch put both into scoring position, before an error allowed both to score and put Trinity in front 4-3. Brian Huttner's two-out RBI single increased the lead, and the insurance run proved the difference, with the Crimson Wave (9-14, 1-1 CCAC) answering with a run in the top of the 9th.
The Trolls will look to move above .500 in conference play, when they host Roosevelt for the first of a three-game series on Thursday. First pitch from Schaaf is set for 1:15 p.m.
