Trolls open series with win over Roosevelt

Box Score

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Jordan Veldman, Nick Andersen, and Michael Moralez led Trinity's high-powered offense on Thursday afternoon, as the Trolls opened the three-game set with Roosevelt by taking a 9-4 win at Schaaf Athletic Complex.

Veldman and Andersen both came up one hit shy of the cycle, with Veldman finishing 3-for-4 at the place with a double and home run. Anderson was 3-for-5, scoring a double, triple, and a pair of runs. Moralez also tallied three base hits in the win, along with a double and a pair of runs scored.

The Trolls (8-13, 2-1 CCAC) took an early lead in the bottom of the 1st, as the first two batters reached base, setting up Anthony Cappelletti's RBI double to left center. Preston Moore's base hit scored another run to give the home team a 2-0 lead after the first frame.

Trinity tacked on single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, highlighted by Andersen's RBI double in the 5th, and an RBI single from Angel Toscana in the 6th that gave the Trolls a 5-0 lead. Two more runs came in the bottom of the 7th, before the Lakers (13-6, 2-1 CCAC) responded with their first run in the 8th. With the bases loaded and one out, the Trolls worked out of trouble with just one run allowed to keep control of the game.

Veldman's home run in the bottom of the 8th, along with Andersen's run on a wild pitch pushed Trinity's lead back up to 9-1. Roosevelt rallied in the top of the 9th, taking advantage of a pair of Trinity errors, but the Trolls worked through the mistakes to earn their second straight victory.

Logan Stuts picked up the win to improve his record to 3-1, pitching 6.2 innings of relief with just one earned run allowed.

The Trolls look to secure the series, when play resumes on Monday morning, March 20. The Lakers will host a doubleheader to close out the set, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. from Ozinga Field in Crestwood.
