Box Score 2 CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Trinity claimed their first series of the conference season on Monday, as the Trolls split an afternoon doubleheader with Roosevelt, dropping game one 10-2 before taking the rubber match, 11-6.
The Trolls (9-14, 3-2 CCAC) cranked out a total of 17 base hits in the second game of the day, highlighted by three home runs all in the 6th inning, as Anthony Cappelletti, Brian Huttner, and Ryan Grand all went deep.
After the Lakers (14-7, 3-2 CCAC) opened with a run scored on three hits and an error in the bottom of the first, Trinity bounced back to even the score on Oliver Carmody's sac fly in the top of the 3rd. Roosevelt moved back in front in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice on four hits for a 3-2 lead.
Trinity rallied again in the 4th with a pair of two-out RBI base hits; Huttner would drive in Cappelletti and Michael Moralez with a double to left, followed by Grand's RBI single for a 4-3 lead. The Lakers would get a run back in their next trip to the plate, but Trinity would extend their lead with three solo home runs in the 6th.
Again the Lakers bounced back, scoring twice in the bottom of the 6th to cut the Trolls' advantage to 7-6. In the top of the 9th, Trinity put the game out of reach with RBI singles from Moralez, Brock Bolser, and Huttner to post four runs in the frame.
Jake Ostrowski kept the Trolls in front, pitching the final 3.2 innings with just one hit allowed and five strikeouts.
In the first game of the day, Nick Andersen hit his team-leading fourth home run of the year to give Trinity an early 1-0 lead in the 1st, but Roosevelt would score six unanswered to build a 6-1 advantage by the end of the 3rd. In the top of the 4th, Bolser would single to drive in Cappelletti on an RBI single, but the Trolls were unable to mount a comeback.
Trinity now will prepare for a three-game series with Judson, beginning on Friday, March 24. First pitch at Judson is set for 3:00 pm, with a doubleheader at home with the Eagles scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 pm.
