Trolls sweep Eagles in twin comeback wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity moved into first place, atop the early CCAC standings on Saturday afternoon, as the Trolls completed a three-game sweep over Judson with a pair of victories, winning 6-5 and 3-2 in a doubleheader at Schaaf Athletic Complex.

The Trolls (12-14, 6-2 CCAC) posted late rallies in each game to come from behind; in the opener, Trinity fell behind 5-2 after a three-run rally in the 6th inning for the Eagles (6-15, 3-5 CCAC). With two walks to lead off the bottom of the 6th, and an Angel Toscana base hit to load the bases, Jordan Veldman, Brian Huttner, and Michael Moralez combined for three straight run-scoring base hits to take a 6-5 lead.

Jacob Hutcherson worked around a walk in the 7th to secure the save, his second of the year. Gunnar Bettenhausen picked up the win in six innings of work. Moralez led the Trolls at the plate in game one, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.

Judson struck early in game two, posting two runs in the top of the 1st. The Trolls responded in the bottom half of the inning with Veldman collecting a one-out single, then stealing second and scoring on Nick Andersen's RBI single.

Both offenses would slow, with Judson being held without a hit for four straight innings, until the bottom of the 8th. Andersen's leadoff walk led to a run-scoring double from Moralez to even the score at 2-2. Two batters later the Trolls would take the lead on Hunter Slaats' game-winning RBI single.

Jake Ostrowski earned the win in game two, pitching seven shutout innings of relief while striking out four. Slaats had the lone multi-hit performance for Trinity, going 2-for-4 with the RBI.

Winners of four straight, the Trolls hold a half-game lead atop the CCAC, and have the first two series to start the conference schedule. Trinity will next head to Calumet, after splitting a doubleheader with the Crimson Wave on March 15, on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch from Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind. is set for 3:30 p.m.
